How to Setup Email in Proton Mail

Follow these step-by-step instructions to configure your standard IMAP/SMTP email account inside Proton Mail. If you want instructions tailored perfectly to your domain name (with the exact servers and ports), please use our generator.

Setup Instructions

  1. Proton Mail uses its own encrypted servers. You cannot use generic IMAP/SMTP without Proton Mail Bridge.
  2. For desktop (Windows/macOS):
  3. 1. Install Proton Mail Bridge from proton.me.
  4. 2. Open Bridge and sign in with your Proton credentials (not the email/password you received here).
  5. 3. Bridge creates a local IMAP/SMTP server on 127.0.0.1 with ports shown in Bridge.
  6. 4. Configure any standard email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) using those local settings.
  7. 5. The password to use in the client is generated by Bridge (not the password above).
  8. For mobile (iOS/Android):
  9. - Use the official Proton Mail app. Sign in with your Proton credentials directly.
  10. For web:
  11. - Go to mail.proton.me and sign in.
  12. Note: The email address your-name@example.com and password Your Password you received are for your *external* account? Proton Mail does not support external IMAP import. If this is a Proton Mail mailbox, use the Proton credentials provided separately.
